What separates good slat work from bad
Almost none of it is visible in a photograph. It registers as the wall simply looking right, which is exactly the point.
- Reveal consistency. The gap between slats set by jig and identical across the entire run, including after a corner.
- Backing continuity. The dark backing behind the slats running true, with no visible seams or panel joints showing through the gaps.
- Planned terminations. Where the run meets ceiling, floor, a window return or a corner is designed, not improvised.
- Outlet integration. Reveals positioned during design so switches and outlets land cleanly rather than being hacked in later.
- Grain sequencing. Boards laid out in order so color and figure flow across the wall instead of jumping randomly.
- Scribing. Panels cut to the actual wall, including the out of plumb parts, rather than forced and filled with caulk.
